Hamabe is a truly unique retreat located about 3hrs south of Tokyo. Perched atop a secluded headland of a natural conservation park, it is a rare property with a view that takes in the full grandeur of the ocean.
Located just south of Shimoda, on the Izu Peninsular this spectacular home is perfect for those who wish to escape the large cities and experience a more off the beaten track part of Japan.

With countless seafood restaurants, Onsen (Hot Springs), Beaches and spectacular scenery Hamabe offers a truly unique Japanese Experience! Matthew from the CH team has been there and can answer any questions. The property is a private residence and the owners have agreed to share the amazing views and experience of hamabe living with others. It is hoped that guests respect, appreciate and of course enjoy that this is primarily a home.

In the renovation of the original Japanese pension, the team from Hamabe Ventures looks to respect both the original design and structure of the house. The main objective however was to open up the house to capture as much of the amazing view without losing the intimacy characteristic to traditional Japanese dwelling. The design concept is simple and minimalist but updated to have both a more contemporary feel and modern functionality. Traditional and classically Japanese material like hinoki (Japanese cedar), washi (Japanese paper), izu-ishi (stone indigenous to Izu), urushi (Japanese lacquer) and of course tatami is used throughout the house. However, there numerous examples of how the design team has added a creative and witty twist in the use of these materials.

Large sliding windows dominate the expansive living room area to take in the sights, sounds and smell of the sea. This can also be enjoyed from a low sitting bar decked in tatami. Also upstairs is a large kitchen area with modern appliances and alibrary/entertainment area.

Materials plays such a large role in the design of Hamabe that each of the 3 bedrooms downstairs is named and themed after a particular material; Ishi (stone), Ki (wood) and Urushi (lacquer)

All bedrooms open up into a fresh garden which is rare in Japan. Even more uncommon and across the lawn awaits a sleek infinity pool. Kawazu-type sakura trees and rocks punctuate this green and lush canvas.
