HISTORY

First sighted by Captain Matthew Flinders in March 1802, the island was named for its abundance of kangaroo inhabitants. The island was first colonised by settlers in 1836, who worked hard over the years to establish a thriving farming and fishing community after a number of hard years. Today, the island is one of South Australia’s most popular holiday destinations and has a thriving tourist industry.
