HISTORY

Selected in 1850 by Governor Sir Henry Young as an ocean port for Murray River trade, the town site was named for his friend Sir Charles Elliot. After a number of disastrous ship wrecks, in 1864 the role of Port Elliot as a port town was ended. This township is now a quiet holiday destination in South Australia popular with those looking for a quiet beach escape holiday.
