Fancy a luxurious holiday? An indulgent escape to an epicentre of natural beauty, fine wine, gourmet food, and utter bliss? Then you need to start planning your trip to the New South Wales South Coast and Southern Highlands, because there’s never been a better time to head south of Sydney and indulge in the extravagance on its doorstep.

Here are five experiences that will make your holiday to the South Coast and Southern Highlands your most indulgent getaway yet.

1. Glimpse breathtaking waterfalls

Nothing says bliss quite like a tranquil waterfall, and the NSW South Coast and Southern Highlands are overflowing with them. From the towering 81-metre Fitzroy Falls between the South Highlands and Kangaroo Island, to Carrington Falls – arguably the most beautiful waterfall on the South Coast, where the Kangaroo River cascades some 50 metres into the picturesque gully below.

There is also the Minnamural Falls that come with a spectacular winding boardwalk that weaves in and out of a lush rainforest, and the smaller Macquarie Pass Cascades that while smaller in size is no less stunning.

2. Sip spectacular local drops

New South Wales’ cool-climate region is brimming with beautiful chardonnays, sauvignon blancs, rieslings, pinot gris, pinot noirs, merlots and cabernet sauvignons. In fact, the South Coast and Southern Highlands regions are home to no less than 20 cellar doors ready to treat you to fantastic wines, delicious gourmet meals and spectacular views of sprawling vines.

Two in particular to add to your list are Centennial Vineyards in Bowral, where you can treat yourself to a tasting, an Italian cooking class, a tipsy painting session, a stunning winery walk or a relaxed lunch in their restaurant. The other is Cupitt’s Estate in Ulladulla where there is quite literally something for everyone, including a family-run boutique winery, cellar door, restaurant, bar, microbrewery and fromagerie.

3. Bathe in blissful beauty spas

Taking in spectacular waterfalls and sampling divine local drops can be tiring work, which is why a wellness spa is the perfect end to a delicious day. Sudden Echo Day Spa in Nelligen is one relaxing place you can lay your weary (and well exfoliated) head for some indulgent facial and body treatments, including a therapeutic spa, quiet sauna, relaxing massage, herbal tea or rejuvenating break wrapped in a mineral clay cocoon.

Alternatively, you can check yourself in for a tranquil wellness session at Sculptress Day Spa in Bowral where their long list of heavenly treatments include age-defying facials, hot stone massage therapy, natural pedicures, and indulgently elaborate pamper packages.

4. Feast on divine fine dining

Regions like the New South Wales South Coast and Southern Highlands are ripe with exquisite local produce, and there is a rich bounty of gourmet eateries plotted throughout that showcase the very best on offer. One restaurant that does local flavours justice is Small Town Food + Wine in Milton on the South Coast. This neighbourhood bistro boasts the likes of fresh Rocky Point oysters; prawn, scallop and chicken skin dumplings; and yuzu sorbet with plum, sake and rice custard, as well as a selection of tantalising aperitifs.

In the Southern Highlands we have Eschalot – a romantic dining spot nestled in Berrima, serving up heavenly modern Australian fare. Self-declared lovers of the Southern Highlands and celebrators of local produce, expect to encounter a fresh and unique dining experience from these food connoisseurs. Overwhelmed by the goodness on offer? Leave it to the folks that know best and opt for the ‘Chef’s Feed Me’ option, featuring dishes such as pork belly with caramelised pineapple, banana and capsicum; honey glazed fried chicken; and lemon curd tart with meringue and vanilla bean ice cream.

5. Come home to luxury accommodation

The cherry on top of an indulgent getaway is without doubt the luxury accommodation awaiting you at the end of every day. Think elegant estates with floor-to-ceiling windows, designer bathrooms, manicured gardens, lavish living spaces and private swimming pools, framed in either sprawling hills or breathtaking coastal views.
