Palm Springs eat your heart out. This stylish home brings desert glamour to Sydney’s east, only with a nicer climate and city views to die for.

The three-storey, mid-century house in one of the harbour city’s most sought-after neighbourhoods was once the Cambodian consulate, but has been transformed into an oasis of Californian charm thanks to a high-end renovation under the aegis of top design firm Alwill Interiors.

Entry is on the ground floor (where a two-car garage makes parking a breeze), which consists of a huge kitchen/living/dining area, two bedrooms and a family bathroom. Floor-to-ceiling windows in square modernist style provide natural light throughout the day and overlook the large, cactus-studded backyard and pool. And did we mention the view? The upper levels of Kambala Palms feature panoramic vistas across the Eastern Suburbs to the Sydney skyline.

Upstairs the entire floor has been converted into a glorious master suite, a colossal space divided into sleeping, bathing and dressing areas by sliding timber screens. The marble en-suite bathroom is breath taking, with his and hers vanities and a giant freestanding tub perfect for soaking away the hours. It all opens onto a private balcony with a view even better than that on the floor below (hard as that is to believe).

Downstairs is a space where the young, or young at heart, can get away from the grownups, a comfortably furnished rumpus room with an adjoining queen bedroom. It gives onto the generously sized backyard, replete with modern lounges, towering cacti and, of course, the beautiful pool. This level also plays host to a home gym, which will suit active travellers, while a self-contained granny flat with kitchenette adds further flexibility to the set up.

What the owner loves
Kambala Palms is a labour of love, so it’s no surprise the owner appreciates its beautiful interior design. This is a home where nothing is out of place, where every piece of furniture, every fixture and all the bits and bobs have been considered. Original artworks line the walls and indoor greenery adds to the sense of brightness. It’s like something you’d see in a magazine, only so much more comfortable.

What we love
Located just east of the Sydney CBD, Bellevue Hill is one of the city’s most exclusive suburbs. The quiet, leafy streets are lined with mansions and European cars, yet it’s only minutes to the renowned Bondi Junction shopping precinct and the white sand beaches of the city’s eastern edge. Spectacular walks in Cooper Park and along the Harbour Foreshore are within easy reach, along with high-end restaurants and nightlife at Double Bay and Paddington.

What the family traveller loves
Travelling with children or friends doesn’t mean having to compromise on style and comfort. Kambala Palms does it all, with the flexibility of separate self-contained spaces, a master bedroom to escape to and the pool to keep children entertained all day long. Not only that, it’s located in an incredibly safe, quiet area surrounded by green space and activities. It’s also utterly private. The perfect place to stay.
