Ask anyone and they’ll tell you: Queensland is actually better in winter. Summer generally heralds the monsoon, and high humidity in Spring gives the sensation of travelling inside an armpit.

Queensland winters are usually crisp, sunny and warm. But if the weather turns chilly, there are plenty of cosy getaways inside Lamington National Park and the Great Sandy National Park. The Sunshine Coast hinterland has some cute cafes, too – try Little May Espresso or Monica’s Café.

Winter is also considered one of the best times to visit the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. Minke whales and Humpbacks generally migrate here during winter, and you’ll spot plenty of crocodiles during a sunset cruise along the Daintree.

If you’re looking for an underrated island getaway, consider Bedarra Island or head to Port Douglas for sugar-white beaches, sea turtles and bush walks.
